2-Hydroxyhippuric (Males Under Age 13)

Optimal Result: 0 - 1.2 mmol/mol creatinine.

A conjugate of the amino acids, glycine and hydroxybenzoic acid (salicylic acid). Intake of aspirin (salicylates) or the growth of salicylate-producing gastrointestinal bacteria may elevate levels. Also increased after the ingestion of the arti cial sweetener, aspartame (Nutrasweet).

What does it mean if your 2-Hydroxyhippuric (Males Under Age 13) result is too high?

High 2-hydroxyhippuric acid may result from:

- ingestion of aspartame (Nutrasweet)

- salicylates (aspirin)

- dietary salicylates

- from GI bacteria converting tyrosine or phenylalanine to salicylic acid.

Very high 2-hydroxyhippuric also inhibits dopamine beta-hydroxylase resulting in elevated HVA, decreased VMA, and elevated HVA/VMA ratio.

Elevated levels of 2-Hydroxyhippuric acid on an Organic Acid Test (OAT) typically indicate increased exposure to or ingestion of xylene, a solvent found in products like paints, varnishes, and certain industrial chemicals. Xylene is metabolized in the body into 2-Hydroxyhippuric acid, so higher levels in an OAT can reflect higher xylene exposure. This can occur through environmental contact (inhalation or skin contact in areas with high xylene use) or dietary sources, as xylene can contaminate certain foods. To address elevated levels, it's crucial to reduce exposure to xylene by identifying and eliminating or minimizing contact with sources of xylene in personal and occupational environments. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in work environments with potential xylene exposure, ensuring good ventilation in spaces where xylene-containing products are used, and opting for xylene-free products can significantly help. Additionally, supporting liver and kidney health through a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and regular exercise is important as these organs play a key role in metabolizing and excreting xylene metabolites. Consulting with a healthcare professional is essential to understand the significance of these elevated levels in the context of overall health and to receive personalized advice for reducing exposure and supporting the body's detoxification processes.
