Glycolic acid is an indicator of genetic disease of oxalate metabolism called Hyperoxaluria type I due to a deficiency in the enzyme activity of alanine glyoxylate amino transferase (AGT).
Oxalates are compounds found in many foods, and can be worsened from Candida overgrowth. High oxalates are associated with pain in the joints, muscles, and connective tissues. They can also trap heavy metals (such as mercury, lead, and arsenic) in the body and lead to mineral imbalances. Certain behavioral issues and self-injurious tendencies have been associated with high oxalates.
Normal values rule out genetic causes of significantly elevated urinary oxalic acid.
A low glycolic acid level on an Organic Acid Test (OAT) can suggest several physiological conditions or dietary patterns. Glycolic acid is a byproduct of the metabolism of glyoxylate, and its low levels might indicate a reduced intake or metabolism of glyoxylate precursors, such as ethylene glycol (found in antifreeze) and oxalates (found in certain foods like spinach and nuts). It could also reflect efficient metabolic function, where the body effectively processes and eliminates glyoxylate without accumulating excess glycolic acid. Additionally, low glycolic acid levels might be associated with variations in liver function, as the liver plays a key role in metabolizing glyoxylate. However, it's important to interpret these levels within the broader context of overall health and alongside other clinical findings. Low levels of glycolic acid are not typically a primary concern but should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to understand their significance in the context of individual health status.
Treating low levels of glycolic acid typically involves general health and dietary measures rather than specific treatments, as these levels are not usually a primary concern. It may include reviewing and adjusting dietary intake, particularly focusing on the balance of foods that influence glycolic acid levels, such as those containing oxalates. Maintaining liver health is also important, as the liver plays a critical role in metabolizing various substances, including those related to glycolic acid metabolism. This can be supported through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and moderating alcohol consumption. Ensuring overall nutritional adequacy and staying well-hydrated are key for supporting the body's metabolic processes.
