Diphtheria Antitoxoid Antibody

Reference range:

Diphtheria antitoxoid antibodies are specific immunoglobulins (also known as antibodies) produced by the human immune system in response to the diphtheria toxoid vaccine or exposure to the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which causes diphtheria.

What is Diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can lead to difficulty breathing, heart rhythm problems, and even death. It's caused by strains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae that make toxin. Diphtheria spreads easily and happens quickly, and mainly affects the nose and throat. It's spread from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets, from coughing or sneezing.

These antibodies play a crucial role in conferring immunity against the potentially fatal diphtheria toxin.

The presence and level of these antibodies in the blood are indicative of an individual's immune status to diphtheria; a higher titer of antitoxoid antibodies typically suggests adequate protective immunity.

The diphtheria vaccine, which is part of routine childhood immunization programs worldwide, contains a modified form of the toxin (toxoid) to safely stimulate the production of antitoxoid antibodies without causing disease. Monitoring levels of diphtheria antitoxoid antibodies can help determine the need for booster vaccinations to maintain immunity and prevent outbreaks of this serious infectious disease.
