Anti-Myelin basic protein (IgM)

Optimal Result: 0.1 - 10 Units.

Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a protein believed to be important in the process of myelination of nerves in the nervous system. Anti-Myelin basic protein is related to the risk for multiple sclerosis, autism, PANDAS/ANDAS/OCD, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

MBP is the most widely studied myelin protein in MS and the second most abundant myelin protein after the proteolipid protein that constitutes the myelin sheath, which is necessary for the normal activity of the vertebrate nervous system.

What does it mean if your Anti-Myelin basic protein (IgM) result is too high?

Anti-myelin basic protein (-MBP) autoantibodies have generally been considered to be absent from sera from healthy individuals, but to be detectable in sera from some patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, their pathogenic role is uncertain.

MS is a chronic, progressive disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that occurs when the immune system attacks and damages the myelin sheath around nerve fibers.

However, it is important to note that the presence of anti-MBP antibodies alone is not diagnostic of MS, and additional testing and evaluation by a healthcare professional are necessary to determine the underlying cause of the antibody presence and any associated symptoms.
