Streptozymes (NADase, DNase, streptokinase, streptolysin O, and hyaluronidase) are extracellular products, or exoantigens, of the streptococcus bacteria. Streptococcal antigens can bind to specific receptors on human cells and if found to pharyngeal or dermal epithelial cells, tissue penetration by the pathogen can occur. In this scenario, a throat culture will not detect the pathogen, while a serological antibody assay will. Streptozyme antibodies are markedly increased in PANDAS and OCD disorders, as well as rheumatic heart disorders and reactive arthritis.
