Gliadin (AGA) IgA

Gliadin (AGA) IgA is one of the original antibodies used to assess immune reactivity to gluten. Gliadin is a protein found in wheat and other gluten-containing grains. In some individuals, the immune system mistakenly identifies gliadin as harmful and produces antibodies against it.

While AGA IgA can indicate a reaction to gluten, it is considered less specific and less accurate for diagnosing celiac disease compared to newer markers such as deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) and tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibodies. However, it may still provide useful information in certain clinical contexts, particularly when evaluating non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) or broader immune responses to gluten.

What Does an Elevated AGA IgA Mean?

Elevated AGA IgA levels may suggest:

  • Immune sensitivity to gluten
  • Non-celiac gluten sensitivity
  • Possible celiac disease (less specific)
  • Increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”)

Unlike DGP antibodies, AGA antibodies target native (non-deamidated) gliadin, which makes them more prone to false positives and less reliable for confirming celiac disease.

Symptoms Associated with Elevated Levels

Elevated AGA IgA may be associated with:

  • Bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Fatigue or brain fog
  • Headaches
  • Skin issues
  • Generalized inflammation

Symptoms can vary widely, and some individuals may have minimal or no noticeable symptoms.

Important Testing Considerations

Testing should be performed while consuming a gluten-containing diet for accurate results.

AGA IgA is typically interpreted alongside more specific markers, including:

  • Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA
  • Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) antibodies
  • Total IgA levels

Because of its lower specificity, AGA IgA is not used alone to diagnose celiac disease, but may provide supportive or complementary information.

What to Do If Your Levels Are High

If AGA IgA is elevated:

  1. Follow up with more specific celiac testing (tTG and DGP antibodies)
  2. Do not remove gluten from your diet before confirmatory testing
  3. Work with a healthcare provider to determine whether symptoms are related to gluten

If gluten sensitivity or celiac disease is confirmed, a gluten-free diet may be recommended.

Why This Marker Matters

Although largely replaced by more accurate tests, AGA IgA can still help identify general immune reactivity to gluten, particularly in individuals with non-celiac gluten sensitivity or early immune responses.

What does it mean if your Gliadin (AGA) IgA result is too high?

Elevated AGA IgA indicates an immune response to gliadin and may reflect gluten sensitivity or broader immune activation, though it is less specific for celiac disease than newer markers.

What Healthmatters Members Are Saying

5 stars rating

I have been using Healthmatters.io since 2021. I travel all over the world and use different doctors and health facilities. This site has allowed me to consolidate all my various test results over 14 years in one place. And every doctor that I show this to has been impressed. Because with  any health professional I talk to, I can pull up historical results in seconds. It is invaluable. Even going back to the same doctor, they usually do not have the historical results from their facility in a graph format. That has been very helpful.
