Diethyldithiophosphate (DEDTP)

check icon Optimal Result: 0 - 0.17 ug/g.

Diethyldithiophosphate (DEDTP) is a metabolite of organophosphates, which are one of the most common causes of poisoning worldwide and are frequently intentionally used as pesticides. They can enter the body through the lungs or skin, or by eating contaminated food. Even at low levels, organophosphates may be hazardous to the nervous system, especially for foetuses and young children. Repeated or prolonged exposure may induce impaired memory and concentration, disorientation, severe depression, irritability, confusion, headache, speech diculties, delayed reaction times, nightmares, sleepwalking, drowsiness, or insomnia. Organophosphates function by inhibiting the action of cholinesterase enzymes in nerve cells. An inuenza-like condition with headache, nausea, weakness, loss of appetite, and malaise.

What does it mean if your Diethyldithiophosphate (DEDTP) result is too high?

Elevated levels of Diethyldithiophosphate (DEDTP) are significant as DEDTP is a metabolite formed by the biotransformation of organophosphorous (OP) pesticides. It has a longer half-life than its parent compound, suggesting a persistent presence in the body once exposure has occurred.

Research has shown that DEDTP can induce genotoxic and immunotoxic effects:

Genotoxicity refers to the compound's ability to damage genetic information in cells, which can lead to mutations and potentially contribute to the development of cancer.

Immunotoxicity refers to the ability of a substance to affect the immune system. DEDTP has been associated with increased tumor size and a reduced response of lymphocytes to tumor antigens, suggesting that it could affect the growth of tumors and alter immune responses at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Furthermore, DEDTP has been found to show immunotoxic effects on T cells and natural killer cells, as well as immunomodulatory effects on macrophages, which are critical components of the immune system. These effects could modify the body's response to tumors and other immunological challenges.

Exposure to DEDTP has also been shown to lead to lower secretion of important cytokines like IL-2, IFN-γ, and IL-10 by human CD4+ T lymphocytes, which play a role in the regulation and signaling of the immune system.

Additionally, high levels of DEDTP and other OP metabolites have been linked to an increased prevalence of sleep disorders in adults, indicating a potential impact on neurological health. There is also evidence to suggest that exposure to DEDTP during pregnancy can negatively affect the neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants, such as expressive communication and fine motor performance.

How does DEDTP enter the body?

Diethyldithiophosphate (DEDTP) can enter the body through several routes, typically as a result of exposure to organophosphate pesticides, which are used in agriculture and pest control. Here are the common pathways of exposure:

- Inhalation: Breathing in air that contains pesticide particles or mist can lead to DEDTP entering the body. This is more likely in agricultural areas where pesticides are sprayed, or in spaces that have been recently treated for pest control.

- Dermal (skin) contact: Skin exposure can occur if you come into contact with surfaces or plants that have been treated with organophosphate pesticides. DEDTP can be absorbed through the skin, especially if the pesticides are not yet dry or if protective clothing is not worn during application.

- Ingestion: Eating food that has been treated with organophosphate pesticides and not properly washed can result in ingestion of DEDTP. This is one of the more common routes of exposure for the general population.

- Occupational exposure: People who work in agriculture, pest control, or in the manufacture of these pesticides are at a higher risk of exposure. Such individuals are advised to use personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize the risk.

- Environmental exposure: Living near agricultural areas where pesticides are frequently used can increase the risk of environmental exposure to DEDTP.

To minimize the risk of DEDTP entering your body, it is important to follow safety guidelines when handling organophosphate pesticides, ensure proper washing of fruits and vegetables, and use appropriate protective gear if you work in environments where these substances are present. If there is a concern about potential exposure to DEDTP or similar compounds, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider or a professional specializing in environmental health or toxicology.

Potential treatment:

Since DEDTP is a metabolite of organophosphate pesticides, it would be important to stop exposure to the source of organophosphates. This could involve avoiding areas where these pesticides are used, changing dietary habits to reduce ingestion of contaminated food, or changing occupational practices if exposure is work-related.

If elevated DEDTP levels are detected, it is crucial to consult healthcare professionals who specialize in toxicology or occupational medicine. These specialists can provide guidance on the appropriate measures to take, including monitoring, health surveillance, and, if necessary, treatment for any health effects.

For someone with elevated levels of DEDTP, a doctor might also recommend certain detoxification methods, such as using certain supplements or therapies that support liver and kidney function, which are involved in metabolizing and excreting toxins. However, these methods should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

What Healthmatters Members Are Saying

5 stars rating

I have been using Healthmatters.io since 2021. I travel all over the world and use different doctors and health facilities. This site has allowed me to consolidate all my various test results over 14 years in one place. And every doctor that I show this to has been impressed. Because with  any health professional I talk to, I can pull up historical results in seconds. It is invaluable. Even going back to the same doctor, they usually do not have the historical results from their facility in a graph format. That has been very helpful.
