3a-Dihydroprogesterone (3a-DHP), also known as 3a-hydroxyprogesterone, is an endogenous neurosteroid. It is biosynthesized by 3a-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase from progesterone. 3a-DHP has been found to act as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAA receptor and is described as being as active as allopregnanolone in regard to this action. In accordance, it has anxiolytic effects (= decreasing anxiety) in animals. 3a-DHP has also been found to inhibit the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the rat pituitary gland, demonstrating possible antigonadotrophic properties.

3a-Dihydroprogesterone is a metabolite of progesterone, a hormone produced in the female body primarily by the ovaries and, to a lesser extent, by the adrenal glands. This metabolite is involved in various physiological processes, and its levels can have implications for postmenopausal women's health.
→ Breast Cancer Risk: Elevated levels of circulating progesterone, which includes 3α-Dihydroprogesterone, have been associated with an increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer in some studies. Women with higher circulating progesterone levels had an elevated risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.
→ Hormonal Regulation: Progesterone and its metabolites, including 3α-Dihydroprogesterone, play important roles in hormonal regulation in women's bodies. These hormones are involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and other reproductive functions.
It's important to note that the significance of 3α-Dihydroprogesterone levels can vary based on an individual's overall health, medical history, and specific hormone profiles. Elevated levels may have different implications for different women. Therefore, interpreting hormone levels should be done in consultation with a healthcare provider who can consider the individual's unique circumstances.
