Fructose
Emerging research seems to show a relationship between the rise in metabolic diseases and the increased consumption of fructose—particularly consumption of non-natural sources of fructose found in sugar-sweetened beverages and other processed foods.
Elevated fructose levels should be further investigated. Dietary fructose intake should be determined, modified if excessive, and monitored for metabolic changes.

What does it mean if your Fructose result is too low?
Fructose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) found naturally in fruits, honey, and some vegetables, and it’s also produced in small amounts in the body from glucose through a process called the polyol pathway. On the OMX panel by Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory, fructose is measured as part of assessing carbohydrate metabolism and energy balance.
Low levels of fructose may suggest reduced dietary intake, impaired glucose-to-fructose conversion, or altered energy metabolism. This can occur in situations such as restricted carbohydrate diets, fasting states, or low activity of the aldose reductase enzyme, which converts glucose to sorbitol and then to fructose.
Decreased fructose may also reflect diminished substrate availability for glycolysis and other metabolic pathways that depend on carbohydrates for cellular energy. In some cases, it may point to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, or poor glucose utilization, where the body shifts away from carbohydrate metabolism toward fat oxidation for energy.
In summary, low fructose on the OMX panel can be a marker of low carbohydrate intake, enzyme inefficiency, or energy metabolism imbalance. Evaluating diet, fasting patterns, and overall metabolic health can help determine the underlying cause.
