Biotin
Function: Biotin is required for proper metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. Biotin-dependent enzymes catalyze the addition of carboxyl groups (COO-) from bicarbonate, for use in fatty acid biosynthesis, gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis, propionate metabolism, and leucine catabolism.
Deficiency Symptoms: Symptoms of biotin deficiency include erythematous exfoliative dermatitis, thinning hair, fatigue, irritability, mild depression, somnolence, muscle pains, anorexia, nausea, mild anemia. Infants with seborrheic dermatitis, Leiner’s disease or alopecia may indicate a biotin deficiency, along with symptoms of ketoacidosis, poor feeding, vomiting, lethargy, coma, and developmental retardation. Dietary symptoms include fatigue, dry skin, body hair loss, nausea, loss of appetite, and mild depression. Those at risk for biotin deficiency include: persons consuming excessive amounts of raw egg whites, inherited disorders of biotin metabolism, extended total parenteral nutrition (biotin-free), loss of enteric gut microfloura from antibiotic therapy or altered gut motility, pregnant and lactating women, antiepileptic drug therapy, alcoholics, trauma (burns and surgery), elderly, malabsorption (especially achlorhydria).
Repletion Information: Dietary intake of foods rich in Biotin should be increased. Do not eat raw egg whites.
Nutritional Supplements, Nutritional Yeast, Legumes, Rice Bran, Whole Grains.
The estimated adequate daily dietary intake for biotin is 30-100 mcg for adults. No adverse effects have been noted in humans ingesting up to 2000 mcg daily for long time periods.

What does it mean if your Biotin result is too low?
If Biotin levels are low on the SpectraCell Micronutrient Test, it suggests a functional intracellular deficiency—meaning that your cells are not getting or utilizing enough biotin, even if blood (serum) levels appear normal. This can impact multiple metabolic pathways and may be linked to various symptoms and health issues.
What Is Biotin?
Biotin (also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H) is a water-soluble B-vitamin essential for:
-
Fat and carbohydrate metabolism
-
Amino acid utilization
-
Energy production (via its role in carboxylase enzymes)
-
Maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails
-
Supporting nervous system function
What Does a Low Biotin Result Mean on the SpectraCell Test?
SpectraCell’s test measures intracellular biotin—how well your white blood cells are actually using biotin over time. A low result indicates:
-
Impaired absorption, utilization, or storage of biotin at the cellular level
-
Potential biotin deficiency, even if recent dietary intake or serum levels seem adequate
Possible Causes of Low Biotin Levels
-
Insufficient dietary intake (rare, but possible in strict low-nutrient or ultra-processed diets)
-
Overconsumption of raw egg whites, which contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin and prevents its absorption
-
Gut dysbiosis or malabsorption (e.g., due to IBS, celiac disease, SIBO)
-
Antibiotic use, which can reduce gut bacteria that synthesize biotin
-
High alcohol intake
-
Genetic metabolic issues (e.g., biotinidase deficiency, though rare)
-
Chronic inflammation or stress, which may impair nutrient uptake
Symptoms That May Be Linked to Biotin Deficiency
-
Thinning hair or hair loss
-
Brittle nails
-
Dry or scaly skin
-
Fatigue or low energy
-
Depression or mood instability
-
Muscle pain or weakness
-
Numbness or tingling in the extremities
-
Poor glucose control
What to Do About a Low Biotin Result
-
Dietary support: Increase biotin-rich foods such as eggs (cooked), liver, salmon, nuts, seeds, and legumes
-
Supplementation: Biotin supplements are available, usually in 1,000 to 10,000 mcg doses. Your provider may recommend a targeted dose based on test results.
-
Address gut health: If absorption issues are suspected, addressing gut dysbiosis may help restore micronutrient balance
-
Avoid raw egg whites if consuming them regularly
-
Retest in 3–6 months after nutritional intervention to confirm improvement
Clinical Insight
Low biotin may not cause symptoms immediately but can contribute to long-term issues with metabolism, skin, and nervous system health. Correcting a deficiency often leads to noticeable improvements in energy, mood, and skin/hair health.
