Deamidated Gliadin Peptide
Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) refers to a modified fragment of gliadin, a major protein component of gluten found in wheat, barley, and rye. During digestion and intestinal inflammation, gliadin peptides can be chemically altered (deamidated), making them more immunogenic and more likely to trigger an immune response.
DGP antibodies measure the immune system’s reaction to these altered gluten fragments rather than to gluten exposure alone. This makes DGP a highly sensitive marker of gluten-related immune activation, particularly in the context of intestinal permeability and mucosal inflammation.
Elevated DGP antibodies are most commonly associated with celiac disease, where gluten exposure drives an autoimmune response that damages the intestinal lining. However, increased DGP levels may also be seen in individuals with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, chronic gut inflammation, dysbiosis, or compromised gut barrier function.
On functional panels such as the Gut Zoomer, DGP is interpreted as part of a broader immune and gut integrity assessment. It helps distinguish between simple dietary gluten exposure and pathologic immune reactivity driven by impaired barrier function and immune dysregulation.
DGP is often evaluated alongside tissue transglutaminase (tTG) and other immune markers to clarify the degree and mechanism of gluten-driven immune stress.
Normal or low DGP antibody levels suggest appropriate immune tolerance to gluten-derived peptides and intact gut barrier function. In this context, gluten-related immune activation is unlikely to be a primary driver of symptoms.
Lab Results Explained and Tracked
What does it mean if your Deamidated Gliadin Peptide result is too high?
Elevated DGP antibody levels indicate abnormal immune reactivity to deamidated gluten peptides and are strongly associated with gluten-driven intestinal inflammation. High values may reflect celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or increased intestinal permeability and are often linked to digestive symptoms, nutrient malabsorption, fatigue, and systemic immune activation.
