Prostate volume, the measure of the size of the prostate gland, is a significant factor in men's health, particularly in the context of conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. In healthy adult men, the average prostate volume is about 20-30 milliliters, roughly the size of a walnut. However, prostate size can vary and tends to increase with age. Enlargement of the prostate, often seen in BPH, can lead to symptoms like urinary frequency, urgency, and difficulty in urination. Prostate volume is typically assessed through medical imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI and can play a role in diagnosing and managing prostate-related conditions.
Lab Results Explained and Tracked
What does it mean if your Prostate Volume result is too high?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
As men age, the prostate cells can increase in number (benign prostatic hyperplasia [BPH]), increasing the overall size of the prostate organ. The prostate is normally a walnut-sized gland in the groin that secretes fluid to protect and nourish sperm. The urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body) travels through the prostate. As men age, the prostate gradually grows in size, and by age 50, approximately 50% of men have BPH. Risk factors for BPH include aging, genetics, obesity and lower physical activity. If the prostate becomes too large, it can block urine flow and result in lower urinary tract symptoms including: needing to urinate often (especially at night), difficulty starting to urinate and having a weak urine stream.
If you are having symptoms, discuss this finding with your primary care provider and/or a urologist for further evaluation and management, which can start with lifestyle changes (e.g. reducing fluid intake before bedtime, limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption, and practicing “double voiding” [after you empty your bladder, wait a moment, relax, and try to urinate again]). Medical management includes medication (two main classes of medication include alpha-1-adrenergic antagonists that relax the prostate and 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors that shrink the prostate over time), minimally invasive therapies and surgery.
