Picolinate is a neurotransmitter metabolism marker and is produced under inflammatory conditions.
Picolinate is a catabolite of the amino acid tryptophan through the kynurenine pathway [1].
Its function is unclear, but it has been implicated in a variety neuro-protective, immunological, and anti-proliferative affects [3]. In addition, it is suggested to assist in the absorption of zinc ions and other divalent or trivalent ions through the small intestine.
Neurotransmitters are the chemicals your nervous system uses to function and communicate with your body. Abnormalities in this area can relate to symptoms of mental, emotional, and behavioral problems.

Picolinate elevations can be caused by inflammatory processes induced by the immune system [2]. High protein diets can increase production of picolinate whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids divert the flow through the kynurenin pathway to quinolinate. In cases of elevated urinary picolinate, supplemental mineral-picolinate salts may be contributing sources.
Treatment considerations:
- Decrease protein diet
- Add Omega 3's (algae based)

- Antioxidants (Vit C, Vit E, Lipoic acid)
- Omega 3
- Fatty acids
