IgG, Quant, CSF
IgG, Quant, CSF – What It Means and Why It Matters
IgG, Quant, CSF stands for Immunoglobulin G, Quantitative, Cerebrospinal Fluid. This test measures the concentration of IgG, a type of antibody, in your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)—the clear fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord.
What is IgG?
Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most abundant antibody in the body. It plays a critical role in immune defense by identifying and neutralizing viruses, bacteria, and other foreign substances. IgG is normally found in the blood but can also be present in small amounts in the CSF.
Why Measure IgG in CSF?
This test helps detect abnormal immune activity or inflammation within the central nervous system (CNS). It's often used in the diagnostic workup of:
-
Multiple sclerosis (MS)
-
Chronic CNS infections (e.g., neurosyphilis, Lyme disease, viral meningitis)
-
Autoimmune diseases affecting the brain or spinal cord
-
Neurological complications of systemic diseases
What Does a High IgG, CSF Level Mean?
Elevated IgG in the CSF may suggest:
-
Multiple sclerosis (MS) or other demyelinating diseases
-
Chronic inflammation or immune activation in the CNS
-
Intrathecal synthesis of IgG (i.e., the body is producing IgG within the CNS)
In MS, this test is often interpreted alongside oligoclonal bands and the IgG index, which compare CSF IgG to serum IgG to determine whether the elevated antibodies are coming from within the CNS.
What Does a Low IgG, CSF Level Mean?
A low level of IgG in the CSF is typically not concerning on its own and may simply reflect:
-
Normal immune activity
-
Reduced CSF sampling or protein levels
-
Rarely, impaired immune response in immunocompromised individuals
Summary
IgG, Quant, CSF is an important diagnostic tool for detecting immune activity in the brain and spinal cord. Elevated levels can signal neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis or chronic infections. Interpretation of this marker should always be done alongside other CSF findings and clinical information.
