Helicobacter pylori is a common stomach bacterium that can colonize the gastric lining and contribute to chronic inflammation, ulcers, and long-term gastric disease. Not all H. pylori strains carry the same clinical risk. The oipA (outer inflammatory protein A) gene is a key virulence factor that increases the bacterium’s ability to trigger inflammation and damage the stomach lining.
On the GI – Advanced Profile (US BioTek), testing for the H. pylori oipA virulence factor helps determine whether a detected H. pylori strain is more likely to provoke a strong inflammatory response. OipA-positive strains are associated with increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, enhanced adherence to gastric epithelial cells, and a higher risk of conditions such as chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
The presence of oipA may also correlate with greater symptom severity, including upper abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, reflux-like symptoms, and early satiety. Over time, persistent inflammation driven by virulence factors like oipA can impair stomach acid regulation, disrupt digestion, and increase the risk of mucosal injury.
Interpretation of oipA results should be combined with overall H. pylori detection, additional virulence markers, inflammatory indicators, and clinical symptoms. Identifying virulence factors can help guide treatment intensity, duration, and follow-up strategies rather than relying solely on the presence or absence of H. pylori.
