HPV Aptima (High-Risk HPV mRNA Test)
The HPV Aptima test is a highly sensitive screening tool that detects the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) — the group of viruses most closely linked to the development of cervical cancer.
Unlike traditional HPV DNA tests, Aptima identifies viral mRNA (E6/E7 oncogenes), which signals that the virus is actively affecting cervical cells. This makes it a more specific marker for identifying women at risk of developing precancerous or cancerous changes.
What a Positive HPV Aptima Result Means
A positive result indicates that one or more high-risk HPV types are present and actively producing proteins that may lead to abnormal cell changes over time. This does not mean cancer is present, but it does signal the need for closer monitoring or follow-up testing.
If done alongside a Pap smear, results are used together to determine the next steps in care, such as repeat testing or a colposcopy.
