The Hexagonal Phase Confirm test is a specific laboratory test used to detect lupus anticoagulant (LA), which is a type of antibody associated with antiphospholipid syndrome and other autoimmune disorders. The term "Hexagonal Phase" refers to a particular method of confirming the presence of LA.
This test is part of a broader Lupus Anticoagulant Evaluation which may include various other tests to assess for the presence of these antibodies because they show a great deal of heterogeneity (=diversity).
When a patient's plasma is tested for lupus anticoagulant, the initial screening may involve an assay called the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT). If the APTT result is prolonged, meaning it takes longer than normal for blood to clot, the Hexagonal Phase Confirmation may be performed as an additional step to confirm the presence of LA. This confirmatory test uses a hexagonal phase phospholipid, derived from a soybean extract, that retains its hexagonal structure and can avidly bind LA. This helps in differentiating lupus anticoagulant from other factors that might prolong the APTT, such as heparin therapy, thus providing a more specific indication of the presence of these antibodies.
Furthermore, understanding the outcome of the Hexagonal Phase Confirm test is important for the diagnosis and management of conditions associated with LA, such as an increased risk of thrombosis. A weakly positive result may have different implications and can be significant in the context of a patient's clinical picture, especially if they are on anticoagulation therapy with medications like heparin or warfarin.
