Creatine phosphokinase (CPK)

Optimal Result: 29 - 168 U/L.

Creatine kinase (CPK) is a group of enzymes found in skeletal muscle, the brain, and the heart muscle. Damage to one or more of these tissues will liberate CPK into the serum, thus raising serum levels. CPK catalyzes the breakdown of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) into adenosine diphosphate (ADP), a process that liberates highenergy phosphate for metabolic processes such as muscle contraction.

This test may be used to:

- Diagnose heart attack

- Evaluate cause of chest pain

- Determine if or how badly a muscle is damaged

- Detect dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and other muscle diseases

- Tell the difference between malignant hyperthermia and postoperative infection

What does it mean if your Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) result is too low?

Decreased CPK levels may be seen in chronic muscle atrophy.

What does it mean if your Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) result is too high?

When the total CPK level is very high, it most often means there has been injury or stress to muscle tissue, the heart, or the brain.

Muscle tissue injury is most likely. When a muscle is damaged, CPK leaks into the bloodstream.
