Citrobacter species
Citrobacter species are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family and are commonly found in soil, water, food, and the human gastrointestinal tract. In healthy individuals, Citrobacter may exist at low levels without causing harm. However, when the gut microbiome becomes imbalanced or immune defenses are compromised, these bacteria can behave as opportunistic pathogens.
On the Complete Microbiome Mapping (NutriPATH) test, Citrobacter species are measured to help identify bacterial overgrowth and microbial imbalance within the intestinal ecosystem. Elevated Citrobacter levels may be associated with symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, irregular bowel habits, or signs of intestinal inflammation.
Some Citrobacter species are capable of producing endotoxins and triggering inflammatory immune responses, which can impair gut barrier function and contribute to systemic inflammation. Overgrowth is more likely in individuals with reduced stomach acid, prior antibiotic use, chronic stress, or underlying gut dysbiosis.
Interpretation of Citrobacter species levels should be made in context with overall microbiome diversity, beneficial bacteria levels, inflammatory markers, and digestive symptoms. Addressing Citrobacter overgrowth typically focuses on restoring microbial balance rather than eradication alone.
Low levels of Citrobacter species are generally considered a normal finding and consistent with a balanced gut microbiome. At these levels, Citrobacter is unlikely to contribute to digestive symptoms or inflammation.
What does it mean if your Citrobacter species result is too high?
Elevated levels of Citrobacter species may indicate opportunistic bacterial overgrowth and gut dysbiosis. High levels can be associated with digestive symptoms, intestinal inflammation, and increased gut permeability.
Management may involve targeted antimicrobial strategies, dietary adjustments, gut barrier support, and microbiome-restoring interventions such as prebiotics or probiotics. Clinical guidance is recommended to determine the most appropriate approach based on symptom severity and overall microbiome findings.
