Carboxyhemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin that develops when carbon monoxide (CO) binds to red blood cells. Carbon monoxide has a much stronger affinity for hemoglobin than oxygen does—over 200 times stronger—so even modest exposure can reduce the body’s ability to carry oxygen. This test measures the percentage of total hemoglobin bound to carbon monoxide and is used to evaluate oxygen-carrying capacity, detect carbon monoxide exposure, and assess smoking status or environmental/occupational risks.
In healthy nonsmokers, carboxyhemoglobin levels should typically be below 2% of total hemoglobin. Average smokers often show levels around 4–5%, whereas heavy smokers may reach 8–12% due to chronic exposure to cigarette smoke. Levels above 15% are considered potentially toxic and may indicate dangerous carbon monoxide exposure, such as from smoke inhalation, vehicle exhaust, faulty fuel-burning appliances, poor ventilation, fire environments, or industrial fumes. Carboxyhemoglobin elevation decreases the oxygen available to tissues, which can cause symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, confusion, fatigue, and chest discomfort; severe exposure may lead to fainting, arrhythmias, organ injury, or death if not recognized and treated promptly.
A normal result suggests no significant carbon monoxide exposure and healthy oxygen-carrying blood function. Elevated levels often improve with fresh air, oxygen therapy, and removal from the exposure source. For smokers, reducing or quitting smoking typically lowers carboxyhemoglobin levels and improves oxygen delivery. Clinical interpretation should consider symptoms, smoking status, environmental risk factors, and workplace conditions. Individuals with high results—especially above toxic thresholds—should seek medical attention, as rapid treatment can prevent serious complications and promote full recovery.

Yes, you can! We highly recommend activating Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for your account. To do so, please navigate to the "Profile and Security" section of your account, where you will find instructions for activating 2FA.
